5 More Things I Stopped Buying To Get Out Of Debt ($3000+)

Recently, I spoke about my journey with credit card debt and the spending habits I acquired to get myself out of said debt. In this article, I’d like to talk about 5 more things I stopped spending in order to pay off my debt.

1. Traveled Sized Toiletries

I’m someone who likes to go out a lot, and I have traveled a bit. However, I tend to avoid collecting small, travel sized toiletries. 

Instead, I bought my own set of containers and filled them with product I already had. That way, I’m not wasting anything by buying something I would only use for a few days at a time.


2. Paper Towels & Disposable Wipes

I am not a fan of these for numerous reasons. It really feels like tossing away money. Instead, I much prefer to use clothes, and just wash them after I’m done. You can find these in multi-packs at any store that carries cleaning supplies. I recommend finding microfiber towels specifically.


3. Cheap Jewelry

This can be appealing in the short term. But the cost to maintain and eventually replace cheap, plated jewelry can make it a hassle. Not to mention, buying well made, real jewelry can be considered a personal investment. 

Having a few timeless pieces you’ll be able to pass on to family ends up being more worth the price in terms of sentimental value.


4. Seasonal Decor Every Holiday

This has become an overconsumption trend. Year round you can walk into Target or Walmart and find decorations for some holiday or event. Often, they hop on bandwagons of what’s popular, and create things that will only end up in a landfill. 

It sounds like a no brainer, but you should really be reusing your decorations. I also recommend making your own decorations, especially around the holidays! Even more so if you have kids to make them for you! ;)

5. “Treat Yourself” Food Runs

Let’s be clear: treating yourself is not a bad thing. But if you do it every other day, then is it really a treat? Or just another part of your weekly routine?

Try to save these treat yourself days for really special occasions. That way they actually feel like something you are treating yourself with, and you also save money on whatever your vice may be.
